As an adult, “playing” can seem idyllic, or even silly. The word ‘play’ brings up images of hide and seek or giggling outside while running through the sprinklers.
For some reason, play and childhood are intertwined. For adults, play is something we EARN when we are done with all our work.
But recent research tells us that play is essential for the stimulation and creativity of adults as well!
I know it seems counterproductive, but playing (taking real time off to do something fun) can actually be beneficial to your health, relationships, and yes, even your business.
Here is what the research is telling us about adults and playing:
1.) Play can relieve stress.
Fun triggers the release of endorphins, the body’s “feel-good” chemicals. Endorphins promote an overall sense of well-being and can even temporarily relieve pain!
2.) Play can improve brain function.
Playing stimulating games like chess or crossword puzzles (yes, even on your phone) can help prevent memory problems and improve your overall brain function. If you add in playing with friends and family, it can also help ease, or even prevent, depression.
3.) Playing stimulates the mind and boosts creativity.
We all understand that play helps children learn, but the same can be said of adults.
You learn a task better when it’s fun and you’re in a relaxed and playful mood. Playing can also stimulate your imagination, which will help your mind adapt and problem-solve in other areas of your life.
4.) Playing improves your connections and relationships with others.
Laughing and having fun together can foster empathy, compassion, trust, and intimacy with others.
5.) Playing keeps you young.
Playing can boost your energy and vitality. Studies have shown it can even improve your resistance to disease!
George Bernard Shaw said:
“We don’t stop playing because we grow old; we grow old because we stop playing.”
There you have it, 5 scientifically-proven reasons that you, as an adult, should start playing more, without feeling guilty, because it’s good for you and for your business!
